The Four Thieves Vinegar – A Flu Prevention Solution?

I’ve recently read the story of the four thieves vinegar. I first heard about it when I was compiling my 2009 Flu Report and read the following in the Herbal Vinegar book by Maggie Oster. She wrote:

“Four Thieves Vinegar – Among all the therapeutic vinegars, Four Thieves Vinegar is legendary. Folklore hold that during one of the plague epidemics in Marseilles, four robbers were able to steal from the dead and dying without themselves succumbing by dousing themselves with this mixture. Recipes vary, but the generally accepted ingredients include the leaves of rosemary, rue, sage, wormwood, and mint plus lavender flowers and camphor gum. Other ingredients sometimes mentioned are calamus root, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and garlic.”

I would like to know what others know about this as an antiviral and antibacterial solution. Let me know in your comments what recipes you have and how you have used this solution. I am told that an essential oil made with these herbs was tested at Weber State University and found to kill 99% of virus and bacteria. I’ve also heard that this four thieves vinegar is a good insect repellent if you are out in the woods.

The four thieves vinegar certainly sounds like it might be something that could help us to prevent the flu, don’t you think?

Leave you comments, recipes and thoughts below.
