Another thought about Vinegar
In my last blog entry we talked about the folklore about the four thieves, and their vinegar that helped them to steel from victims of the plague without dying from the disease as so many others were dying. Today I want to just talk about one of the qualities of vinegar that is been proven, and yet many just don’t know about it. Vinegar kills the majority of bacteria and flu type of bugs on contact. See the answer to the WikiAnswers.com question, “Does vinegar kill bacteria?”
“Yes, vinegar DOES kill many bacteria and viruses, including many very dangerous ones that can be in food such as E. Coli O157:H7 (see for example scholarly research that shows this ). It is probably good to use in the kitchen and other places that you may be worried about harsher chemicals like bleach getting into food.
Vinegar can also increase the bacteria-killing power of bleach greatly if you don’t mind using some of both for a spray to use on surfaces (see http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2006-02/asfm-vik021306.php). According to the article a mixture of 1 cup vinegar, 1 cup bleach and 1 gallon water will even kill dangerous bacteria such as anthrax in spore form and kills “virtually anything in 10 to 20 minutes.”
Wow – Vinegar can do a lot more than we realize. Which is why one of the essential and inexpensive things you can do to kill the flu virus in your home and protect your family from the flu is to clean everything with vinegar. I usually have some white vinegar in a spray bottle and spray everything down in the rooms that we touch, and that really will help kill the flu germs that normally help the flu spread from person to person.
